Gym etiquette

How many times have you gone to the gym, grabbed the dumbbells, walked over to the open bench and prepared to sit down and knock out a strong set only to see that someone had just used the bench and didn’t wipe it down. Ugh.

This is just one example of bad gym etiquette and unfortunately it seems to be happening more and more. I get it, many of us head to the gym to have some time alone and work on our fitness, but I feel that many are forgetting that they aren’t the only ones using the gym.

Here is my list of Bad Etiquette Offenders:

  1. The Singer. Oh boy. Someone call American Idol because we just found the newest singing sensation - NOT! Reminder, while you might be wearing headphones and singing your heart out, many of us aren’t wearing them and it’s hurting our heart.

  2. The Sweater. Nope, not the ugly Christmas kind. The sweater as in bodily functions gone bad. Hey, we get it, you are working out hard (and it shows). Grab the wipes big fella and clean up aisle 5 please!

  3. The Ego Lifter. Hey it’s cool that you can lift those 120lb dumbbells, but guess what, you got them off the rack, I am betting you can get them back “on” the rack as well.

  4. The Social-lite. Social as in media. The one who parks it on the equipment and decides now is a great time to catch up on the Instagram stories that they have ignored for the past 15 minutes. Of course they are ignoring the fact that a line is forming to get on that piece of equipment.

  5. The Hoarder. Where in the heck did all the dumbbells go? Oh, there they are, in the corner with the mat and the person who decided that their workout was going to need the 5, 10, 15 and 20lb dumbbells - all at once.

  6. The I-Never-Cleaned-My-Room’er. This person likes to pull out all the plates, put them on all the stations they are using and then simply leave them there in hopes that someone else will come around and put them all back.

All of these are real case scenarios and it can be really frustrating. The irony is that many of these offenders hate it when someone else does any of them as well. The gym is a place for all of us to come and work on our fitness and hopefully meet some new friends. There are many, many more offenders than the six I listed here, but you get the idea.

Lift well!
